It's a simple mission, really: help a group of migrating Corsola reach their destination safely. It's one perhaps better suited to an actual ranger, but at soon as Luka had seen that they were looking for volunteers, her name went right on the list. She'd heard about the decimation of the Corsola population in Galar...how awful if that were to happen here too! [break][break]

And at least she's not doing this alone. Her Chartreuse buddy, Martín del Mar , has been roped along for the task at her insistence. But then again, who in their right mind could say no when fixed with pleading doe-eyes and her charming smile? If Luka were a bit more shrewd, she'd be using that to her advantage more often. [break][break]

"Do you see anything yet?" Luka asks, peering into the water for any sign of a disturbance. "The water looks so calm today...lucky us, right?" She taps her flippered feet against the bottom of the little rowboat they'd been given- small, but at least outfitted with a motor and the rest of the supplies they might need. Snorkels, masks, and another set of flippers in case they need to get in the water to fend off any predators, but with any luck they won't need any of these, and the journey will be smooth sailing for everyone.[break][break]

It's too bad Luka had never been very lucky.

Martín del Mar is a charitable man. A philanthropist, as many have called him. A man who will always help those who need it and who will gladly donate generous amounts to worthy causes.

This is how people see him, and yet, most of the time, it is this way because this is how Mars wants people to see him. A great act. PR. Isn’t it always about PR?

Usually, yes, but not this time.

Helping with the migration of a beloved pokémon whose population is in decline has the potential for great optics, especially with their posts online about it and the drones filming footage of the migrating Corsola. But, beyond that, they’re pokémon Mars actually likes, and perhaps that is why he so easily agreed when his friend requested his assistance.

Her smile was also a factor in this, of course, because seeing Luka sad or disappointed is not something Mars would ever want. She’s too sweet for expressions like those, and he will always prefer seeing his friends smiling.

”Nothing yet, but I have Erato keeping an eye on things down there just in case.” As if on cue, the Milotic comes near the surface to swim beneath the boat, her beautiful serpentine body swaying gracefully with the currents. Mars smiles faintly at the sight, then looking ahead at the horizon and the clear late Summer skies. Luka is right, the waters are calm.

”Lucky... or maybe the calm before a storm?” Unlike his friend, Mars is more of a realist than an optimist, and he knows better than to assume the former despite the smirk he gives her. There’s no such thing as luck; Mars believes in making his own fate, and he will make damn sure these Corsola are okay.

"Eh...come on, don't think like that! I'm sure everything will be just fine." Her boundless optimism is as endearing as it is seemingly naïve. But Luka has known sadness, and she has known pain, and it has made her kind. And she hopes, perhaps a bit desperately, that if she simply wills things to be okay, then they will be so.[break][break]

She continues to stare down into the water, a brilliant turquoise teeming with life that she cannot see. Though every so often the surface is broken by a pink spine of the Corsola they're accompanying. Luka doesn't have a Pokemon like Mars' to aid with reconnaissance; her Slowpoke, like her, is lazily draped over the edge of the boat and staring into the water as well. Side by side, slack-jawed and pink, they look almost identical. [break][break]

"Your Milotic is really pretty, by the way," Luka remarks as she watches the graceful fish dive underwater again. The sun reflects off her scales, a dazzling rainbow visible just before it slips away under the boat. "I had a friend back home that raised Feebas. I know most people prefer the evolution...but I think Feebas are pretty cute too." It must be nice though, the guarantee of evolving into something beautiful. "Well, they're both lovely. Maybe someday I'll get a chance to- wait, did you see that?"[break][break]

She squints beneath her sunglasses, eyes fixed on a lone splash far up ahead. The water quickly goes still again- it's probably nothing.[break][break]

”I can see what you mean, Feebas have their own charm for sure! I’ve had Eltanin since back when she was one, and I miss it at times...” There’s a light chuckle that accompanies his words, for while Mars may be someone who clearly cares quite a lot about things like beauty and aesthetics, his appreciation for water-dwelling pokémon runs even deeper than things like those...

Out here, in the middle of the ocean, is where he feels most at home, and perhaps this shows itself most obviously in the way his mood is even better than usual.

His smile is even brighter.
[break][break]
He even seems at peace despite the high stakes of their task.
[break][break]
”Don’t get me wrong, though. She’s perfect just as she is.” The sight of the Milotic is mesmerizing, and his eyes fall upon her once more, frowning just so slightly at the way she suddenly disappears underwater as if something caught her attention. Seems like Luka is right: there’s something out there.

”Looks like we’ve got company.”
[break][break]
This time, he does not smile, and without another word, Mars reaches for a pokéball. What’s released this time is a Starmie of a beautiful cornflower blue, the gem at its center shining in the same colour.

”Hesione, deal with whatever’s out there while Erato protects the Corsola.”
[break][break]
A simple command and the pokémon jumps into the water with no hesitation at all.
[break][break]
It’s one of Mars’ most trusted team members, after all.

And just like that, Luka's hopes of a peaceful afternoon are dashed.[break][break]

She had hoped to complete this mission quickly and have enough time left over to even out any tan lines that might have formed under Hoenn's unforgiving sun. At least she'd taken enough preventative measures to avoid the dreaded farmer's tan.[break][break]

But there's no time to entertain such frivolities anymore. Though honestly, Luka isn't yet convinced that whatever's out there is a threat. Perhaps it's just a friendly Pokémon, or one of the Corsolas getting a bit restless! But Martin's reaction convinces her to take things a bit more seriously. She sits up, alert, and stares out at the water. There's more splashing now, and dark shapes ripple under the ocean's surface. They definitely seem to be closing in on the vaguely pink blob that makes up the school of Corsola.[break][break]

Her Slowpoke sloooooowly turns around to stare at her, and her Sobble looks rather fearful as he peers over the edge of the boat. Neither of them are the best choice to send into a potentially dangerous battle. So though it goes against the grain, her Musharna is sent out instead.[break][break]

"Can you help protect the Corsola, please?" Luka asks her, and Plum begins to float off over the water. She makes handy use of her psychic abilities to lift several of the Corsola out of the water where they dangle safely out of harms way— some of them seem confused and even a little frightened, but they're at least unharmed.[break][break]

Back in the boat, her Slowpoke yawns as his tail swirls in the water. It draws lazy circles around and around, exuding the lightly sweet sap unique to his species.[break][break]

One of the dark shapes in the water up ahead breaks from the group. Attracted to the swirling lure, it approaches the boat at an alarming speed, and a blue fin protrudes above the water.

One of the main problems with an underwater battle is how difficult it is to give their pokémon commands once they dive in. It can be done, sure, but it’s a hassle and by the time it is done, it can already be too late. If anything, it’s much better to have a strategy set beforehand, or to rely on a pokémon’s battle instincts...

In the case of Mars’ own team, after endless hours of ruthless training, a mixture of both is applicable.
[break][break]
”Good job, Luka. Keep that up.” With the Corsola out of harm’s way thanks to Luka’s Musharna, his pokémon have little reason to hold back, and that quickly shows in the way a TWISTER forms in the water, heading directly for their attackers.
[break][break]
Or, well… Most of their attackers, since one of them breaks away from the group, it’s fin rising above the water as it approaches the boat.
[break][break]
Sharpedo, then?
[break][break]
Good, his Starmie knows how to deal with those.
[break][break]
Just as Mars thinks this, the bright beam produced by POWER GEM hits the approaching pokémon, right before it hits the boat. It makes the vessel itself shake, and Mars reaches for the gunwale.

”Hold on!”

The last thing they need is for one of them to fall in the water, no?

"Good job, Plum!" Luka repeats, making sure to pass the praise where it actually belongs. Above the waves her Musharna strains to hold so many wiggling Corsola aloft, and the air fills with their panicked cries. The tapir's wide, blank face leaves little room for expression, but even at a distance Luka can tell that she's struggling. If the Corsola fall now, it'll be straight into gleaming teeth and snapping jaws.[break][break]

Luka clenches her jaw as she watches them, knuckles white as they grip the edge of the rowboat. Her Sobble doesn't quite understand what's happening but he seems frightened nonetheless, sniffling underneath the bow with his tail wrapped around his eyes. But Slowpoke is as blissfully oblivious as ever, his tail a pendulum that continues to attract more predators.[break][break]

The impact that rocks their boat startles her, but Mars' warning comes just in time. Luka steadies herself and grabs a hold of Sorbet, who curls into her arms and whimpers. Slowpoke tumbles in as well, with a low and questioning cry, as though he's been roused from a deep slumber.[break][break]

More Sharpedo are drawn to the sweet scent that still lingers in the water around their vessel. Two more fins join the first, bodies slamming into the hull with enough force to knock it into the air, just for a moment. Panic sets Luka's teeth on edge, though she tries not to let it consume her— and mostly fails. When she glances over at Mars her eyes are wide and frightened.[break][break]

"W-what should we do?"

The emotions that show themselves in Luka’s expression are all too easily recognized; panic, fear, and worry. He can’t blame her feeling them, because they’re how most people would react in a situation of this kind, but life has taught Mars that there are much more dangerous things than pokémon in this world, and in all of his pride, he sure isn’t about to let something like a shiver of Sharpedo get the better of him. Not today, not ever, and certainly not like this.

He takes a deep breath, steading himself despite the constant rocking of their vessel.
[break][break]
”It’ll be okay. Have your Musharna hold the Corsola up for a few more seconds.”
[break][break]
Just enough time for his pokémon to act.
[break][break]
”Erato!” As if by instinct, the Milotic knows what to do; making use of SURF to summon a huge wave that pushes the boat (and the Musharna and Corsola once it reaches them) forward and away from their attackers. At the same time, the Starmie stays below, where the force of the wave wont push it away, and its with a couple of precise THUNDER WAVES that it PARALYZES the Sharpedos, stopping them from continuing to chase after their intended prey. After that, a few attacks properly deal with them.

Up on the surface, Mars turns to look at his companion, approaching to check on her since the large wave soon fade away and they reach calmer waters.

”Are you okay, Luka?”
[break][break]
Thankfully, the Corsola seem to be doing fine as well, now safe from danger.

Plum strains to keep all the Corsola afloat as they wiggle and thrash. They sink lower and lower towards the roiling waves despite her best efforts, hovering just above snapping jaws and flailing fins.[break][break]

It's hard for Luka to keep from panicking, but Mars' presence helps immensely. While she's frantic he remains calm and steadfast, a fixed point. She reaches out to grab his hand— bold, perhaps, but in entwining their fingers she can pretend to absorb some of his calm.[break][break] "Okay," Luka says, taking a deep, shuddering breath. She takes a moment to steady herself, eyes squeezed shut as tightens her grip on his hand, trying to will her heartrate to slow.[break][break]

"You can do it, Plum!" she calls out, trying to keep her voice calm and encouraging. "Just a bit more!"[break][break]

They all brace themselves as the waves rise and churn, but at the end of it the Sharpedo have been chased off and the Corsola are safe. Plum finally releases the Corsola with what seems like great relief, letting them splash back into the ocean unharmed.[break][break]

"I'm fine," Luka gasps out, releasing Mars and checking over her Pokemon once more for any injuries. Sorbet looks shaken but otherwise okay, and her Slowpoke just yawns and curls up under her seat. Plum slowly floats back towards their boat after making sure all the Corsola have been submerged safely, and Luka promptly returns her to her love ball for a well deserved rest.[break][break]

"We're fine," she corrects with a smile. "Thank you, Monsieur. I don't think we would have gotten through that without you...h-hopefully the rest of the journey goes smoothly.
